About remove image background

Remove image background cuts the main subject out of a photograph and makes everything else transparent, in a single step. Use it to place a product on a clean white background for a listing, to make a cutout for a design, or to prepare a headshot with a plain background for an ID application.

This works by running a small trained segmentation model inside your browser. The model looks at the image and works out, pixel by pixel, which parts belong to the subject and which belong to the background. It is the same general approach commercial background removers use, running on your own device rather than on a server somewhere else.

Expect good results on clear subjects against plain backgrounds, which covers most product photography and ID photos. Hair, fur and thin structures such as glasses frames or lace are the hardest cases, and the edge may come out slightly ragged or soft. Where that happens, increasing the edge softness slider helps blend the cutout into a new background. If you are replacing the background rather than keeping it transparent, a soft edge hides small errors considerably better than a hard one.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The segmentation model runs in your browser on your own device. After the first load it works from your browser cache, so it functions offline and no image ever leaves your machine.

Why does it need to download 40 MB on first use?

Background removal needs a trained neural network, and that model file is the network. It is cached after the first download, so later uses are instant and work without a connection.

What images does it work best on?

A clear subject against a fairly plain, evenly lit background. Product photos on white and headshots against a plain wall are close to ideal. It struggles with busy backgrounds, low contrast between subject and background, and heavy shadow.

Will hair and fine edges look right?

Usually reasonably, but hair against a complex background is the hardest case and can look soft or slightly cut off. Raising the edge softness blends the transition and hides small errors.

What format should I download?

PNG for a transparent cutout, since JPEG cannot store transparency at all. If you pick a background colour instead, JPEG is smaller and the transparency is not needed.

Is there a limit on image size?

The model works best up to around 1000 pixels on the long edge, and very large images are slow on mobile devices. There is no upload limit because there is no upload.
