About blur image
Blur image softens a picture or part of one. Use it to obscure something that should not be identifiable, such as a licence plate, a house number, a face, or a field in a document. Pixelation is an alternative that is harder to reverse than blur.
Blur and pixelation are not equally strong. A blur is a real filter, and mild blur can sometimes be partially reversed by someone who knows what is behind it, or estimated from a similar photo elsewhere. Pixelation replaces the area with large blocks of average colour, which destroys the information rather than smoothing it. For anything genuinely sensitive, pixelation is the safer choice, and strong blur is reasonable only for a casual privacy need.
Depth of field is a third mode that blurs everything except a selected region, which is useful for product photography where the background competes with the subject. Brightening the whole image slightly to match the blurred areas stops the sharp subject looking pasted on, which is the usual giveaway that an effect has been applied.
Frequently asked questions
Is blur enough to hide a face or a plate?
For a casual privacy need, a strong blur is usually enough. For anything genuinely sensitive use pixelation, which removes the information rather than smoothing it and cannot be undone by unblurring.
What is the difference between blur and pixelate?
Blur smooths the pixels together, so some information survives and a determined person could estimate it. Pixelation replaces the area with large blocks of average colour, which discards the detail entirely. Pixelation is the stronger of the two.
Can I blur just one part of an image?
Yes. Choose the area mode and drag a rectangle on the preview. Only that region is processed and the rest is left untouched.
What is depth of field good for?
Product and portrait photography, where the subject should be sharp and the background should not compete with it. It is also the standard look for a hero image on a landing page.
Does blurring reduce file size?
It can, because blur is easier to compress than fine detail, but it depends on the format. It is not a reliable way to reduce size; use a compression tool for that.
Are my images uploaded?
No, all processing happens in your browser on a canvas.
