About watermark image
Watermark image stamps a text or logo mark onto a picture. Use it to stop your photos being reused elsewhere, to brand a set of images, or to mark a proof before sending it to a client.
Placement is the decision that matters. A corner watermark is unobtrusive and easy to remove by cropping, so it is a deterrent rather than protection. A watermark tiled across the whole image survives cropping, because cropping any part of the picture still leaves watermark on it. If you actually need to prevent reuse, tiling is the only one of the two that works, and it does cost you visual cleanliness.
Keep the opacity low. Around 30 to 50 percent is enough to be credited and still readable, and above roughly 70 percent the watermark starts to dominate the photograph, which defeats the point of publishing it at all. A shadow behind the text makes a light watermark legible over a pale sky without needing to raise the opacity.
Frequently asked questions
What opacity should a watermark use?
30 to 50 percent for a corner mark, and 15 to 25 percent if you are tiling the whole image, since the repetition adds up. Above about 70 percent the image stops being pleasant to look at.
Is a corner watermark effective?
It is a deterrent, not protection. Anyone can crop a corner off in a second. Tiling across the whole image is much harder to remove without visibly damaging the picture.
Can I use my own logo?
Yes. Switch the watermark type to image and select your logo file. A transparent PNG gives the best result, because it sits on the photo without a visible box.
Does watermarking reduce image quality?
No, though exporting as JPEG re-encodes the file and applies the quality setting once. The visible result is a very slight generational loss, the same as any JPEG save.
Which format should I export?
JPEG for photographs, which keeps the file small. PNG if your logo has transparency and you need that transparency preserved, since JPEG cannot store it.
Can I watermark a whole batch?
Not on this page, which handles one file at a time. Run the batch compressor first if you need bulk processing.
