How to use image converter

  1. 1
    Add your image

Drop any common format onto the panel. HEIC files from iPhones are decoded automatically.

  2. 2
    Pick the target format

Choose what the service needs. Set a background colour if the image has transparency and the target format cannot store it.

  3. 3
    Download the converted file

Optionally resize in the same step, then download. The panel shows the size before and after.

About image converter

Image converter changes a picture from one format to another, and can resize it in the same pass. Use it when a service insists on a particular format, when a device cannot open what you have, or when you simply want a smaller file without opening an editor.

Format choice comes down to what the file is for. JPEG suits photographs and anything that does not need transparency. PNG suits logos, screenshots and diagrams, and keeps both hard edges and transparency, but is usually much larger. WebP is the best all-round compromise for the web, generally smaller than JPEG at similar quality, and supported by every current browser. AVIF compresses best of all but takes far longer to encode, which is why it is worth saving for final delivery rather than quick tests.

One thing to watch when converting to JPEG or BMP: neither format can store transparency, so transparent areas must be filled with a solid colour. A logo saved straight to JPEG often emerges with black or white blocks where the transparency used to be. Choosing a background colour on this page controls exactly what appears there, instead of leaving it to a converter default.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image format for the web?

WebP is the best general answer. It is usually noticeably smaller than JPEG at the same perceived quality, it supports transparency, and every current browser can display it. AVIF compresses better still but encodes slowly and is not supported everywhere.

Why did my transparent PNG come out with a black background?

JPEG and BMP have no way to store transparency, so it has to be replaced with a solid colour. Some converters default to black without telling you. Use the background colour option here to pick white or any other shade instead.

Will converting to JPEG make my image worse quality?

Yes, slightly and permanently. JPEG is lossy, so each save discards a little detail. Converting a PNG to JPEG is a one-way trip, and converting the result back to PNG cannot recover what was lost.

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?

Yes. HEIC is decoded inside your browser before conversion, so no separate app and no upload is needed. The result is an ordinary file you can use anywhere.

Does converting an image reduce its resolution?

Not unless you ask it to. The pixel dimensions stay the same by default and only the encoding changes. Tick the resize box to change dimensions in the same operation.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using the WebP and AVIF encoders built into your device.
