About webp to jpg

WebP to JPG converts images saved in Google's WebP format into the universally supported JPG. WebP is a good format and worth using on a website, but it is younger than JPEG and its support is not complete everywhere.

You are most likely to need this when a file has to leave your computer and land somewhere less modern. Email clients are the usual culprit: several still mishandle WebP attachments, showing a blank preview or nothing at all. Print shops come second, since much of their RIP software predates the format. Some government and job application forms reject it outright with a generic unsupported file type message.

Because JPG cannot store transparency, a WebP with a transparent background needs a colour behind it. Leave the background option on this page at white and transparent areas come out white, which is right almost every time. The converted file will generally be larger than the WebP, and that is the unavoidable price of broader compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use WebP or JPG on my own website?

WebP, with JPG as a fallback. It is smaller at the same quality and every current browser supports it. This page is for when the image has to leave your site and land somewhere less modern.

Why is my converted JPG bigger than the WebP?

Because WebP is the more efficient format. The JPG will match the WebP visually at high quality but take more space. That is the unavoidable cost of wider compatibility.

What happens to transparency?

JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose here, white by default. Convert to PNG instead if you need to keep the transparency.

Can I convert WebP to PNG as well?

Yes, choose PNG in the format dropdown on this page. PNG keeps transparency and is lossless, so the result looks identical to the source, just larger.

Are the files uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the WebP and re-encodes it locally.

Will converting change the dimensions?

No. Only the format changes unless you also use one of the resize tools.
