How to use rotate and flip image
- 1Add your image
If it looks sideways, the panel detects the stored orientation and fixes it automatically.
- 2Rotate or straighten
Use the 90 degree buttons for a quick turn, or the fine slider for a few degrees. Auto-straighten handles a crooked horizon.
- 3Download
The orientation is baked into the pixels, so the file works in any program.
About rotate and flip image
Rotate and flip corrects the orientation of a picture, or fixes a photo taken slightly crooked. The common case is trivial: a phone saved the image with orientation metadata that a program ignored, and it appears sideways. A quarter turn fixes it permanently.
Free rotation is for the less common case where a photo is tilted a few degrees. It is usually the fault of the camera, or of a document photographed on a flat surface at an angle, and it matters for scans and form submissions, where a straight edge is expected. Auto-straighten detects the dominant angle from the image edges and corrects it, which handles most photographed documents in a single click.
Rotating by a non-right angle leaves gaps at the corners, because the rotated rectangle no longer covers the original corners. Filling them from the edge pixels extends the nearest colour outwards, which looks far better than transparent black. For a photographed document you would usually also want to crop afterwards, to remove the borders entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my photo sideways?
Your camera recorded the orientation as metadata rather than turning the pixels, and whatever is displaying the file is ignoring that metadata. Rotating and saving permanently fixes it, which is more reliable than hoping every program reads the tag.
What is auto-straighten for?
It detects the dominant angle in the image and rotates to level it, which is useful for documents and receipts photographed on a flat surface at a slight angle.
What are the blank corners after rotating?
When you rotate by an angle that is not a multiple of 90 degrees, the corners of the original image rotate out of view and leave gaps. Filling from the edge pixels extends the nearest colour in, which usually looks much better than leaving them empty.
Does rotating reduce quality?
Slightly for a free angle, because the image must be resampled, which resamples it once more. Rotating in exact 90 degree steps is lossless, since it only moves pixels around.
What is the difference between rotate and flip?
Rotating turns the image. Flipping mirrors it, which is what you need when a photo is not backwards but you want a mirrored version for a layout.
Are my images uploaded?
No, everything is drawn on a canvas in your browser.
