About exif remover
EXIF remover deletes the hidden information stored inside a photo, including the GPS coordinates that can give away your home address, the camera serial number, the exact date and time, and the software used to edit it. Use it before posting a picture online or sending it to someone you do not know well.
Stripping the data by simply re-saving through a converter does not reliably work, because many programs write their own metadata back out as they save. That is why a dedicated tool is more trustworthy than converting a JPEG to another JPEG and hoping. Here the file is re-encoded with only the minimum information required to display correctly.
Leave the orientation tag in place unless you have a reason not to. A photo taken in portrait on a phone stores its rotation as metadata rather than rotating the pixels, and stripping it makes the image display sideways everywhere. Keeping that single field costs nothing and prevents a very common problem.
Frequently asked questions
What does removing EXIF actually protect me from?
It removes the GPS coordinates, camera and device identifiers, timestamps and editing history. The most serious of these is the location data, which can identify a home address precisely from a photo taken indoors.
Can I strip EXIF by just re-saving the image?
Not reliably. Most editing and conversion software writes fresh metadata, including its own name, when it saves. A dedicated tool re-encodes without that data, which is exactly why it works where re-saving does not.
Will the photo look any different?
Visibly, no. The pixels are unchanged, so the picture looks identical. The only difference is the invisible information attached to it. The file may be a few kilobytes smaller as a side effect.
Why does my photo appear sideways after stripping?
The orientation tag was removed along with everything else, so the program displaying the file no longer knows it should be rotated. Keep the orientation option enabled and this will not happen.
Is removing metadata legal and allowed?
Yes. You are altering a copy of your own file, and the removed data identifies you rather than the photographer.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The file is re-encoded in your browser and handed straight back to you.
