128

Best for logos, icons and graphics. Photos rarely compress well as PNG no matter how few colours remain — use the JPEG or WebP compressor for those.

How to use png optimizer

  1. 1
    Add a PNG

Screenshots, logos and flat graphics respond best. Photographs are better redirected to the image compressor.

  2. 2
    Lower the colour count

Start at 128. Go down only until the file is small enough; extreme values posterize smooth areas.

  3. 3
    Compare and download

The report shows the colour budget and the exact saving so you know what was traded.

About png optimizer

A PNG stores every unique colour it contains, so a screenshot or logo with thousands of shades weighs far more than it should. This optimizer rounds colours onto a smaller palette in your browser, cutting the file noticeably while keeping the shape crisp, and the optional dither spreads each colour step evenly so gradients do not band.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my photo barely shrink?

Photographic noise uses nearly every colour value there is, so even a reduced palette cannot compress the noise efficiently. That is why JPEG and WebP exist for photos and this tool is aimed at vector-like art.

Does alpha/transparency survive?

Yes. Only RGB values are quantized; the alpha channel is untouched, so transparency and edge anti-aliasing hardware requirements are preserved exactly.

Is this lossless?

No. It intentionally changes colour values to reduce file size. The trade-off is controlled, but a lossless route exists for purists.
