How to use favicon generator

  1. 1
    Add your logo

A square PNG with transparency gives the best result at small sizes.

  2. 2
    Adjust padding if needed

A wide logo can be padded to a square so it is not squashed in the tab.

  3. 3
    Download and paste

Grab the ICO and PNG files, then paste the generated HTML into your site head.

About favicon generator

Favicon generator turns an image into the complete set of files a website needs for its tab icon, plus the HTML to reference them. Use it when you are setting up a site, replacing an old icon, or fixing a tab that shows a broken image because the file was never uploaded properly.

Browsers and platforms want different sizes, and using a single large file for all of them is why favicons so often look wrong. A 512 pixel square squeezed into a 16 pixel tab loses the detail that made the logo recognisable. This tool produces each size separately from the original, so the small ones are properly optimised rather than merely downscaled.

The ICO file is included because older browsers and many desktop tools still ask for one, alongside the PNG sizes that everything current uses. The HTML snippet references all of them with the right type attributes, so it works when pasted into the head of a page without further editing.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes do I actually need?

At minimum 32x32 and 16x16 PNG, plus 180x180 for Apple touch icons and 192x192 and 512x512 for Android and PWA icons. This tool generates all of them, and an ICO for older software.

Why does my favicon look blurry in the tab?

Usually because one large image is being scaled down, so the detail that made the logo readable is lost. Generating each size separately from the original is what fixes it.

Should my favicon be square?

Yes. A non-square image has to be padded or letterboxed, which wastes the tiny amount of space available in a tab. Square designs also stay legible at 16 pixels.

Do I need an ICO file still?

Not for modern browsers, which all use PNG. It is still worth having for Windows shortcuts, some email clients and older software.

Where do I put the files?

In your site root or an images folder, then reference them in the head of your HTML with the snippet this tool produces.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Every size is generated in your browser from the file you add.
