How to use image to ascii art

  1. 1
    Drop in an image

JPG, PNG or WebP all work. Lower "detail" values give a denser, chunkier look.

  2. 2
    Pick a character set

Dense keeps dark areas packed with heavy symbols; inverted swaps that around.

  3. 3
Download the PNG or copy the text

The image keeps the art styled in plain monospace, exactly like the text preview.

About image to ascii art

ASCII art converts the brightness of every pixel into a text character, so a photo becomes a portrait made of symbols. Each character is chosen by how dark that spot of the image is, and the rows of characters recreate the original enough to still read as a face, building or skyline.

Frequently asked questions

Why do small pictures turn out clearer?

Ascii art needs enough pixels to describe detail, but the grid is capped at 120 columns. A compact subject centred in the frame gives the best result for the same character budget.

Can I paste the text result anywhere?

Yes. Use the Copy button and it lands as normal text that keeps its shape in chat apps, emails and terminals that use a monospace font.
